How we grow our plants
The key to your success
Our aim is to offer you exceptional plants, not just by their originality but also their diversity and their quality and the preservation of our environment is always a priority. Our growing methods reflect these two factors.
The iris and daylily fields are weeded by hand and we only use organic fertilisers, all of which maintains the soil balance which Mother nature took years to create. The iris, daylilies and our stock plants are grown in a soil which does them no favours. This creates tough plants which establish quickly in your garden.
We use no pesticides, biodiversity is our greatest ally is controlling pests. The potting mixture we use is one third garden soil (the soil from our limestone plateau or « causse ») and lombricompost is the only fertiliser.
All our plants are grown in 1.4 litre « root trainer » pots (10cm square and 17cm deep). This produces plants with an exceptionally good root system, after all the quality of a plant depends on its roots. This is particularly important for plants intended for growing in poor and difficult conditions. The pots are then placed in special frames which prevent the young plants becoming rooted into the ground at the nursery, this avoids unecessary stress when the plant leaves the nursery to be planted in your garden.
We use coconut matting to mulch the pots. This totally natural product reduces weeding, limits water loss and thus unecessary watering and helps to keep the compost in place when the plants are sent by post.
